I got back from the Laszlo User's Group in San Francisco on Thursday night, and I must say I'm really jazzed. They had a lot of great demos, the technology is really cool, and I'm having a great time playing with it myself. I would highly encourage anyone who is familar with HTML/XML and wants to try their hand at app development to check it out. Over the years I've developed a sort of intuition about apps that have that "something" that makes them more than just some flash in the pan (no pun intended) and Laszlo (despite the pretty lousy name) seems to have it.

Mon, October 27, 2003 - 9:20 PMcould you tell us a little more about the meeting? (some of us don't live in SF). Were there demos that aren't linked on their website? -

Re: Jazzed about Laszlo
Tue, October 28, 2003 - 3:12 PMSo this is Laszslo?! I reviewed the PeopleAggregator at SourceForge and saw Marc had Laszlo and wondered: "what's Lazslo?" Went to a site neuronaut showed us: www.laszlosystems.com/lps/lzx...orer.htm and got religion fast. If anyone hasn't played with this stuff, it is pretty neat. I dropped a album into a shopping cart using only 12 lines of code. Are we in API heaven or what? So much functionality with so little clutter. Also looked at Rob J's gift: www.laszlosystems.com/develop...lopment/ and it has the rundown on the architecture. I think I am in love.

Re: Jazzed about Laszlo (user group meeting)
Thu, October 30, 2003 - 11:35 PMNow we get to compare Laszlo to Avalon! -

Re: Jazzed about Laszlo (user group meeting)
Thu, November 6, 2003 - 11:30 PMReply to myself - post PDC. Clearly Laszlo can't be compared to Avalon, but they're very similar - in how they're used and how they produce RIAs (or rich media apps or whatever you wanna call them.)
But compared to building serious, pro apps with a timeline, I gotta say there's GOT to be a better way! Timelines are so,,,, so,,,,, so,,,,, 80's. I mean 90's. -

Fri, November 7, 2003 - 1:09 PMcan you post a link to Avalon information - especially what makes you think they are similar -- I dont really know that much about it yet. -

Sun, November 9, 2003 - 2:13 PMah - ye s- let's see it's public now. Hhhmmmm - well let's start with this architectual drawing of teh whole damm thing (www.gotdotnet.com/team/brad...C2003.png) - which then leads us to Avalon specific stuff = msdn.microsoft.com/Longhorn...ault.aspx -

Re: Jazzed about Laszlo (user group meeting)
Fri, November 21, 2003 - 10:56 AMTotally blown away. I was trying to get away from Microsoft stuff but I think I have been seduced by the dark side of the force. Avalon is doing some pretty funky stuff. They have allowed subclassing on XAML elements, invented this "property" which is like a cross between a method and an attribute. Wow. Avalon is obviously Microsoft's answer to Lazslo. Damn. Bundling it all with Longhorn. and C##. Thanks for the hook up Marc. I am having a hard time resisting the urge to play with their stuff. I mean Java and Open Source is where my heart is, but I have the guilty pleasure of wanting to play with Avalon. Maybe do both? But these learning curves can be murder. I worry about Sun these days... I hate that Microsoft can wave stuff in my face and make me salivate....

Re: Jazzed about Laszlo (user group meeting)
Fri, November 21, 2003 - 11:58 AMMarc,
Went to the Turbine site and man! This stuff is hot. But one question: Turbine 2.4 is supporting "Avalon" components. Are these the same "avalon" as Microsoft's Longhorn "avalon"? -

Any advice for a newbie novice. I use COOKTOP ver2.5 for my xml development and Microsoft Script Editor (Microsoft Development Environment 6.0). I don't know java or tomkat or any of those things, how could I start developing lazlo pages? -

Re: Jazzed about Laszlo
Tue, December 16, 2003 - 11:15 PMCheck out ObjectWare (www.objectware.com). Their IdeaBlade product uses WinForms & remoting, giving the option of binary messaging vice XML if bandwidth is a concern. This is geared more towards business apps vice browser-based b2c.
